Siphosethu Jonathan Hermaans
In 2015, at the age of 11, Jonathan came to stay at Vuyani after experiencing difficult and challenging circumstances at home involving alcohol abuse. He was placed in the temporary care of Vuyani, while his two younger siblings went to live with relatives. Jonathan desperately wanted to be reunited with his siblings, and in 2016, he was able to join them while living in the safety and care of a foster family.
During his time at Vuyani, Jonathan enjoyed the structure and stability of having a set routine, completing his homework and having regular meals. Looking back, one of his fondest memories is a visit to Samara, where he had the opportunity to see wild animals up close and experience them in their natural environment for the first time.
Jonathan matriculated from Nqweba High School in 2022. After matric, he worked in various roles, including as a general worker on a farm and at a local supermarket. He later completed a Management Certificate at East Cape Midlands College and went on to study Electrical Engineering. Although he did not complete the course, Jonathan continued to pursue opportunities and eventually moved to Cape Town to live with his grandmother. There, he completed a Barista course and began working, putting his newly acquired skills into practice.
From a young age, Jonathan has had a deep love for music. While still at school, he began hosting musical events and earned the nickname “Matshamba.” In Cape Town, he became involved in the music industry and experienced both personal and professional success. However, this new chapter also came with its challenges. The fast-paced lifestyle proved tempting and Jonathan struggled to resist some of those influences, leading him to make choices that he would later regret.
While battling addiction and depression, Jonathan made the difficult decision to return home to care for his mother and siblings. Despite the many challenges he has faced, Jonathan has never stopped pursuing his dreams. His experiences have taught him some of life’s toughest lessons, including the importance of trusting that God has a plan and believing in the power of second chances. He has also learned the value of surrounding himself with positive friends and understanding that there is no shame in asking for advice or support.
Perhaps it is these lessons, shaped by both the challenges he has overcome and the support he received along the way, that give special meaning to his memories of Vuyani. For Jonathan, Vuyani was more than simply a place he stayed as a young boy. It was a place that provided him with stability, care and a sense of belonging, something that has remained with him throughout his journey.
For a young man, Jonathan has experienced and overcome a great deal. His journey has been one of resilience, growth and second chances.
