Sethu Fortuin
Sethu’s journey is a powerful testament to resilience, determination and importance of choices. At the age of five, Sethu arrived at Vuyani with his younger sister, Lisa, who was just two years old. They came from extremely difficult circumstances and found safety, care, and stability at Vuyani. Sethu remained there until the age of 7, when he was placed in foster care, until he completed his matric in 2023.
At 14 years old, Sethu discovered the game of chess, a passion that would shape his character and outlook on life. His talent and love for the game quickly developed. In 2019, he competed in the South African Junior Chess Championships in Pretoria, where he achieved an impressive 22nd place out of more than 3,000 participants. He returned to the championships in 2022, and in 2023 proudly represented the Sarah Baartman District at a tournament in Cape Town.
For Sethu, chess is more than just a game. He believes it reflects life itself; every move matters, every choice has consequences, and success comes through patience, strategy, and perseverance.
After completing matric, Sethu volunteered at Clean Trade, a local organisation that collects, sorts, and recycles waste. During this time, Sethu demonstrated exceptional commitment, dedication, and leadership skills. In recognition of these qualities, Sethu was appointed as a group leader, responsible for supervising the team and managing the work area.
In 2026, Sethu began studying Human Resource Management at Eastern Cape Midlands College. Although he is pursuing a qualification in Human Resources, his ultimate dream is to become a lawyer, someone who can stand up for others and make a meaningful difference in their lives.
Looking back, Sethu remembers the confusion he felt as a young boy, not understanding why he could not remain with his family. Today, he sees his journey through a different lens. He recognizes that the opportunities, guidance, and support he received changed the course of his life. Rather than allowing his circumstances to define him, Sethu chose to let them strengthen him.
His story is one of courage, resilience and unwavering determination. It reminds us that our beginnings do not determine our future, and that with opportunity, hard work, and hope, dreams can become reality. Sethu continues to pursue his goals with confidence, inspiring everyone around him to think clearly about your next move!
