Brandon (Deon) Baans
Deon, together with his four younger siblings, was placed at Vuyani in 2016 when he was 12 years old. Several years later, in 2025, their younger sister, also joined the family at Vuyani. Deon and his siblings came from extremely difficult circumstances. From a young age, Deon carried significant responsibility, often caring for his younger brothers and sisters. As a result, he missed a substantial amount of school, which had a lasting impact on his education.
Despite facing learning difficulties and the challenges caused by interrupted schooling, Deon remained determined to build a better future for himself. Although he was unfortunately unable to complete his formal schooling, he refused to let this define him. Committed to personal growth and developing practical life skills, Deon enrolled in the Pre-Learning Programme at Midlands College in 2023, where he worked to strengthen his knowledge and abilities. He also completed the Equip For Life course offered by Freedom Church, and attended two mission trips to Lesotho, gaining valuable life skills and personal development.
In addition, Deon demonstrated a strong work ethic by volunteering at Boundless in the laser department from 2024-2025, where he gained hands-on workplace experience, and at Clean Trade, where he further developed practical skills and a sense of responsibility. Through these opportunities, Deon has shown resilience, perseverance, and a willingness to learn, proving that determination and character can overcome many obstacles.
In May 2026, Deon began working at Supa Quick in Graaff-Reinet, where he is doing exceptionally well. He is enjoying the opportunity to learn new skills and particularly values the hands-on nature of his work. When reflecting on his time at Vuyani, Deon speaks warmly of the many positive experiences he had there. He especially appreciates the lifestyle the home offered, encouraging him to take responsibility for himself, dream about his future, and make the most of the opportunities available to him.
Deon also volunteers at Freedom Church, where he recently served on the leadership team during the holiday programme attended by some of our children. In this role, he guided and supported the children, providing both spiritual encouragement and emotional care.
Deon’s journey is a powerful reminder that a person’s circumstances do not determine their future. Through resilience, perseverance, and the support of a caring community, he has grown into a responsible, hardworking, and compassionate young man who is making a meaningful contribution wherever he serves. Today, Deon is building a promising future for himself while continuing to invest in the lives of others.
