Antonio Grootboom
Antonio was placed at Vuyani in 2016 with his younger brother and sister. He was 10 years old at the time, while his sister was 6 and his brother just 4 years old. Like many of the children in our care, Antonio and his siblings came from extremely challenging circumstances. Their family struggled to meet their basic needs, and Antonio often had to beg for food to help support them.
During his time at Vuyani, Antonio underwent educational assessments and was diagnosed with an intellectual disability, which meant that mainstream schooling was not the right fit for him. Antonio attended Khanyisa Day Care Centre, a skills school in Graaff-Reinet, where he grew in confidence, followed by him spending time at the Vuyani Learning Centre, where our dedicated teachers worked patiently with him, helping him develop foundational literacy, numeracy, and life skills.
When he turned 18, he enrolled at Boundless, a local workplace and training centre that supports individuals with disabilities in Graaff-Reinet. Today, Antonio is thriving at Boundless. He enjoys learning basic woodworking skills, working with his hands, and participating in the centre’s educational programme. His journey is a testament to the impact of patience, encouragement and providing every child with the opportunity to learn and succeed according to their own abilities.
Antonio attends Boundless every day, where he is known for his strong work ethic and determination. The staff often remark that once he is shown how to do something, he is eager to learn and committed to mastering it. With the support and encouragement of the Boundless team, Antonio has also developed a particular love for learning to write, an activity he greatly enjoys.
Vuyani was more than just a home to Antonio, it was a place where he felt seen, valued, and that he truly belonged. It provided him with safety, stability, and protection while laying a strong foundation for his future.
