VUYANI PROGRAMS:

• DEVELOPMENTAL
All Vuyani’s children go to schools in the community. However, because of severe neglect and possible learning barriers some of our children didn’t progress with numeracy and literacy in the mainstream schools. With great excitement Vuyani Safe Haven opened a Learning Centre in April for these children. Vuyani’s vision is to make a lasting difference in children’s lives through equipping them to reach their individual developmental potential.

The Learning Centre has been equipped with a curriculum and all the books, revised and adapted according to the Department of Education Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement from Grade R-4. The aim is to place these children back into the mainstream schools as soon as they have caught up with their peers.
A huge Thank You to the following stakeholders:
• The Rupert Education Trust for financial support,
• The Botanical Sport Club for making available the building,
• Ebben Hufkie, acting as mentor and
• The Department of Education for their support

The picture shows three of Vuyani’s Board members visiting the school —Elaine Stanley (chair), Paul Merifield (treasurer) and Harold Steven-Jennings. The two teachers are Bettie Swartz and Hettie Pienaar.

• RECREATIONAL
Violin program:
Two of our boys have been offered the opportunity to study violin under Charl du Toit, an accomplished violinist and violin repairer and respected leader in the Nieu-Bethesda community, a village near to Graaff-Reinet.

• THERAPEUTIC
Therapeutic services are rendered to children at Vuyani through the intervention of Social Workers, both at Vuyani and from the Department of Social Development when needed. Some of the children who went through trauma, might need more specialised treatment by a psychologist and this is facilitated by Vuyani.
• SPIRITUAL
Vuyani’s children have access to Sunday school, youth meetings and camps to encourage spiritual growth.
• PHYSICAL HEALTH
Vuyani is visited by the Clinic bus from the department of Health every month to see that all children receive their vaccination at the correct time and to pick up any other health challenge.
